Oh clippy! I forgot about clippy. I used to be so irritated with that paper clip.
There is so much to dislike about AI (particularly when used to create music or writing--doesn't that take the fun out of art?) but it also has been very useful to me (research that I cross-check, finding something Google can't, etc) and I know for many, many things relating to healthcare and otherwise (of course much is ethically problematic and we need to address the ethical problems).
Re: the enviro impact of ChatGPT for example, Hannah R wrote a very interesting post in her By the Numbers stack about this recently, worth a browse at least at the chart of its actual minimal impact compared to, say, flying, plant-based diet, or car-free lifestyles. I was surprised! https://open.substack.com/pub/hannahritchie/p/carbon-footprint-chatgpt
Yes, the meat and dairy industries are exponentionally worse! Yet there aren't nearly as many people pointing fingers at them, calling them evil, and insisting they should be shut down! And here's an article with a comparison of the energy use of AI vs. Animal Agriculture. https://bankfornature.org/newsroom/L0iqs4KkinTCOYtqcN9v
Also, your article provides a great jumping point for a conversation on AI. Since it is so divisive it's a fun way to explore the topic. I just read an article from an agent yesterday that basically said f-off if you use it--she might have meant to create work (?) but it seemed there was no gray area.
Yes, it has been a divisive topic (maybe it's just the way the world is today with everything?). But it doesn't do any good to villify individuals for using it when it's the giant corporations who are forcing it upon us. I love the idea of a support group 🤣
Three things I love about your Dear John letter to AI:
1. i learned a new word: sycophant. Thankfully I looked up the pronunciation so I won't accidentally call someone a psycho-fant.
2. your "dirty" joke
3. your A(I)-hole pun
✌️
Dear Sadie: I'm glad you enjoyed the article and learned a new word :) Your pronunciation would certainly be appropriate in this case 😉
Sycophant was also an excellent Seattle band active in the 90s!
I hope that Sycophant rocked a synth.

Me again. I came across this funny article and thought you could start a support group about AI breakups - "Why I Can't Date ChatGPT-5" : https://www.littleoldladycomedy.com/all-works/oqw6uqqxnejf8l7qbspddq8g3umfhf
